How to Engage Millennials in The Work Place

shutterstock_191690525As millennials are graduating from college and starting to enter the workforce, employers are starting to see that their workplace is becoming more and more millennial-based. While some may have thought that millennials were too interested in their social media platforms, especially since they are the “dot.com” generation, it is an inevitable fact that baby-boomers are transitioning into a different part of their lives, whether it is a new position at their job or even retirement.

Since millennials will be needed more, especially in entry-level positions, employers may be wondering how they are able to engage this younger generation long enough to apply to these companies. The list below can help employers relate and communicate to millennials.

Make Your Current Employees Happy

Word gets out fast in today’s world. With websites such as Glassdoor have the ability to find out information such as the environment of the workplace and the satisfaction of current employees of the company is relatively easy to do. In order to entice millennials to apply to your workplace, make sure that your current employees are overall satisfied!

It’s Not All About Money… But Some of It Is

With many millennials recently graduating from school, finances come into play. While many factors go into a recent grad choosing to apply and accept jobs, money can be one of the main factors. However, it is understandable that not all workplaces can offer a stellar salary to potential employees with little or no experience. This can be compensated with benefits, such as a discounted gym membership, or even passes to a local ski resort.

Put Yourself in a Millennials Shoes

Employers were once searching for a job, much like millennials are today. In order to reach and engage these millennials, it is helpful to be able to relate to each other. So, while you may not relate to Millennial’s in certain aspects of your lives, such as years of experience, you can relate on topics such as weekend plans and why you are both interested in your field of work.

Use Precise Communication

No millennial who shows up to a job interview will be impressed by Windows 98. Although a company’s ability to be technologically forward may not be every company’s priority, millennials, a.k.a. the computer generation, do notice how your office operates. By showing that your office can have efficient communication with the employees, as well as computers that are considered “up to speed” by millennial standard, then these potential young employees should be impressed.

Show That Your Company Is with The Times

Today’s workplaces seem to vary from prior generations workplaces. These workplace differences can include differences in workplace culture, dress, and even the schedule. While millennials may have seen their parents get dressed for work every day in a suit, to go to their job that had an extremely stiff atmosphere, where they worked 8am to 5pm every day. That is not always the case anymore. In order to show that they are flexible, employers may introduce a new workplace “norm.” These “norms” can range from casual Friday’s to an open-office environment, and flexible hours. While not all workplaces are necessarily introducing these changes, many millennials may appreciate these changes being made.
