For some people, trying to balance the demands of their career and  personal life is very tough to accomplish. Achieving this goal, which is the elusive “work-life balance” can often feel impossible. Here are a few steps that can help every person dealing with this challenge achieve their goal!

1. Learn Your Employer’s Policies.

Ask about your company’s policies on flextime and working from your own house. If you’re a strong performer, you have a better chance of negotiating an arrangement that works for not only yourself but for the company you work for as well.

2. Communicate.

If you won’t be available for a certain time of the day because you’re dealing with family conflict, let your manager and coworkers know, and you will most likely receive their full support.

3. Use Technology to Your Advantage.

Technology is continuously evolving every day. Technology is always going to improve. This should help make your life a whole lot easier, not control it and make you want to pull your hair out. Put technology away at certain times so that you can focus on the things in life that are most important to you.

4. Telecommute.

Telecommuting a few times a week could help free up valuable hours. You’ll be able to focus on work for long stretches at a time and use the extra hours to meet personal responsibilities.

5. Learn to Say “No.”

Remember that you can respectfully decline when someone asks you to complete a task. When you stop doing things out of guilt and worrying too much, you’ll eventually find yourself focusing on the hobbies that truly bring you happiness.

6. Fight the Guilt.

Stop feeling guilty if you miss an important family occasion or bail on a work meeting. Your co-workers and family will understand.

7. Rethink Your Idea of “Clean.”

Unmade beds or dusty moldings are not signs of failure. There is nothing wrong with being a little messy. If you can afford a cleaning lady, pay them to clean your house.

8. Protect Your Private Time.

Allow yourself to daydream every now and then when you have free time. This is important so that you do not burn out and will be unable to contribute in your work life.

The key word in all of these steps is “balance.” Maintaining a healthy work-life balance can be simple if you follow these eight steps!
