Advice on Interview Prepping
By: Lauren Sauve
Applying to new jobs can be nerve racking, and getting a call asking to interview can be even more so. Each interview is different and preparing for the unknown questions ahead of you is the key to securing the job you want. Follow these steps in order to prepare yourself for your next interview.
-
Understand the Job
When applying to multiple jobs we may not fully read into the company we are applying for. Take time to analyze the job posting and get and understanding of what the company is looking for in a candidate. Many times a job listing will have a list of skills, prior knowledge, personal qualities and requirements that the company wants to see. Write these down and go back to see what qualities you have and can emphasis on during your interview.
-
Research the Company
Try to get a good understand of the culture of the company and what their mission is. Many interviewer’s don’t just want to hire you because you are a good fit for the job, but also a good fit for the company. Look at the “About Us” page of the company (if they have one) or reviews online. Also, networking is key, see if you may know anyone in the network who could help you get your foot in the door.
-
Practice Interviewing
For most people going to an interview is very nerve racking, practicing with family members and friends will help you calm your nerves and prepare for certain questions. There are different formats of interviews (Phone, video, panel etc.), so try to practice in the same format as what you will be doing.

Dress the Part
When going to your interview make sure you look the part. If you are going for a more professional corporate job wearing business attire like dress pants and a nice top or even a suite is a good option. For an interview at a restaurant or less formal environment a nice outfit and looking well groomed may be better suited.
-
What to Bring
When going to an interview it is always a good idea to bring along a portfolio including extra resumes, list of references, list of questions for the interviewer and something to write with. Lastly, make sure to arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of time to start with a good first impression.
