The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media

In today’s society dominated by technology, social media serves a prominent (and consuming) role. Employers both past and present, friends, family, etc. all have access into your life and because of this it’s crucial to have proper social media etiquette—your personal and profession self will thank you.

The Do’s

  • Promote yourself in a positive light
    • Share your accomplishments, but don’t come across as arrogant
  • Engage with your peers
    • In today’s society, it’s not about what you know but rather about who you know.
  • Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
    • Keep in mind that employers may see the content you post, and nothing reflects more poorly than grammatical errors
  • Remember that people interpret humor on social media differently
    • Be careful with humor because everyone will interpret your post differently and it could end up offending someone.
  • Be selective
    • You don’t have to accept or follow everyone, be selective of who your friends are—it’ll make your network that much more meaningful.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t upload anything that contradicts your personal brand
    • If you hesitate to post, there’s a reason and it’s likely best you don’t.
  • Don’t share too much
    • Nothing’s worse than overloading people with content. You don’t want to be annoying.
  • Don’t post controversial information
    • Avoid posting anything controversial because it’s a given that it’ll offend someone.
  • Don’t use inappropriate language
    • Using inappropriate language can offend your audience and make you look unprofessional.
  • Don’t believe everything you read
    • A lot of content that you read isn’t true, so take everything with a grain of salt.
