The Power of the Personal Brand

index

We’ve all come to understand what it means for companies to have an identified brand that they are defined by. What is often overlooked, is the fact that each and every one of us have our personal brand. Every day we share our personal brand whether we realize it or not. When we meet someone for the first time, pass a stranger in the hall, or pick up our groceries, the way we look, speak, behave, as well as what we post online all represent our own personal brand.

The first step in improving your personal brand is to start thinking about yourself as a brand in general. Think about what type of messaging you want to display and what you (and your brand) stands for.

Next, start to formulate your presence online to fit that of the brand you want to represent. Do an online audit and investigate all of your social media. Are there tweets or Facebook posts that don’t reflect positively on your brand? Delete them. Start sharing and posting things that are purposeful and can create added value for your brand. Once you know how you want your brand to be perceived, it will become much easier to start creating and sharing content that your audience can connect to. Additionally, strengthen your online brand by associating yourself with similar brands. Make sure you consider career, college, and colleagues when connecting online. Join groups within your company or from your college, which will add strength and variety to your online brand.

Developing a strong personal brand will help you stand out in interviews, as sometimes good grades and extracurriculars are not enough. Showing potential employers what’s unique about you can help you stick out in a large pool of applicants, as well as give them a better idea of what you can bring to the table.PersonalBrand627x330
