SJFC AMA Students On A Mission

We’re on a mission to end cancer by 2020.

We’re on a mission, and we need your help.

Cancer Mission 2020 was started by Gary Mervis, founder of Camp Good Days and Special Times, in 2010 as a grassroots initiative with the ultimate goal of transforming cancer into a chronic illness, rather than an incurable disease. When his youngest daughter, Teddi, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, Gary’s life was changed forever. Since Teddi’s passing, Gary has made huge efforts to help improve the lives of those touched by cancer in honor of his daughter’s legacy.

Cancer Mission 2020 focuses on legislation that was introduced by  Congressman Tom Reed and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter in January 2015. The legislation, H.R. 617- Clinical Trial Cancer Mission 2020 Act, focuses on the importance of clinical trials and the reporting of cancer research results within a timely manner. Currently, there is often research that goes unreported. Whether the research is successful or not, if it isn’t reported it costs money, resources, and wastes valuable time that many cancer patients don’t have.

Ultimately, the goal is to have this petition signed by thousands of people when it is presented to Congress in January 2016. By signing the petition you are encouraging our legislators to pass an act that will hold researchers accountable and enhance the requirements and accountability for the clinical trial registry data bank.

Let’s end cancer by 2020.

The impacts of cancer can be seen far and wide across the world. On average, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in the United States are likely to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Those people aren’t just statistics; they’re your brother or sister, your mom or dad. A cure is way past due, and that’s why Cancer Mission 2020 is so important.

SJFC AMA has teamed up with Camp Good Days and Special Times and Cancer Mission 2020 in order to help spread the word, and find a cure by the end of the decade. Please join us in this mission! You can sign the petition by clicking here, and please spread the word to your friends, family, and co-workers!
