Dress For Success In The Workplace

Professional-dress-code

The phrase “Dress for Success” is one to live by, especially in the workplace. Going into the workforce after graduation is a scary thing, and it’s critical that you know the do’s and don’ts of what to wear, from that big interview at your dream job or even to work on an average day—what you wear is a direct reflection of you and your character, but it’s an easy thing to mess up.

That said, what you wear to work depends on the environment you are in. At a big corporate place, you may need to be more professional, while some places, like a technology company, can be a bit more business causal. Moral of the story: Dress for your company and avoid clothes that clash with their culture. Here are a few tips so you look your best for success!

Women:

  • Dress pants with a blouse or sweater that doesn’t show too much skin will always look fantastic.
  • Blazers and jackets are always a great choice to accessorize with.
  • When choosing a skirt or dress make sure it is knee length, again, to reinforce not showing too much skin.
  • Heals and flats are appropriate shoe choices. Generally speaking, no boots unless the work atmosphere allows that.
  • Don’t wear too much jewelry; it’ll look like too much is on you. If you wear a big necklace, wear just stud earrings. Big earrings, wear a simple necklace.
  • If allowed, a scarf will be a great accessory as well. Again, make sure clothes don’t clash with culture.

Men:

  • No sneakers or boots, only dress shoes
  • If it is a business causal setting, a polo or sweater and khakis will work just fine.
  • Dress pants with a shirt and tie will also work—for the most part, you can never over dress, but you can definitely underdress.
  • For a professional setting, you need a suit, dress shirt and tie. There’s no way around it.
  • Always wear a belt with your pants because it won’t look right otherwise—and trust me, people will notice. Oh, and always match your belt with your shoes. So, brown shoes? Wear a brown belt of the same or similar shade.
