Marketer of The Month

November Marketer of The Month

Q: What inspired you to join SJFC/AMA?

I was a transfer student from Monroe Community College where I majored in Business Administration. Since I was new to Fisher and new to the marketing major, I wanted to find a fun way to get involved and meet people. Professors, advisors, and emails informed me about the opportunities with SJFC-AMA. I went to the first meeting and fit right in!

Q: What has been your favorite project/event while in SJFC/AMA?

While being in SJFC-AMA, I have had a variety of opportunities to plan events, attend events, network, and produce professional marketing pieces. My personal favorite project has been working on a case study for eBay to compete in the AMA-ICC at NOLA. I was able to work with team members, manage projects, and produce a piece that the team and I are beyond proud of.

Q: What would you say is the biggest benefit of being part SJFC/AMA?

The biggest benefit of being apart of SJFC-AMA is the networking opportunities. I have been introduced to an unlimited amount of employers in and near the Rochester area. Not only is this beneficial for my career search, but also the general aspect of learning so much from these contacts.

Q: What has been your favorite project/event while in SJFC AMA?

Answered above 🙂

Q: If you could be anyone for a day (dead or alive) who would it be?

This question is kind of ironic. I often tell people that if I could be anyone in the world, it would be me. Not because I am great or perfect by any means, but I am content with the life I live and I would rather focus on bettering myself and living the best experiences than focusing on wanting what others have.

Q: Where are 3 places you would like to visit on holiday and why?

Three places I would like to visit on the holiday include Puerto Rico (because I already have a trip planned there, woo!), Ireland (because that is my dream vacation, and the library. I love reading, but never have time to read non-school related books during the semester.

October Marketer of The Month

Morgan van der Horst, VP of Professional Development

Q: What inspired you to join SJFC/AMA?

It’s actually a funny story about how I joined. After declaring my major as media management at the end of my freshman year, I knew I wanted to get involved with some of the marketing related groups on campus like AMA. Then when fall semester of my sophomore year came along and I had the opportunity to join those groups, I was scared to because I didn’t know anyone in them. So the first couple weeks, I kept putting it off telling myself I would go to the one next week but I never did. Then spring semester came and I knew more who were involved, but I felt as if I was too busy to join. Finally, during AMA’s Harry Potter Week in February, I participated (and won) the scavenger hunt they hosted on campus. I went to the meeting the following week to claim my prize, and ended up staying for the whole meeting. During the meeting the next week, I helped the professional development group set up a speaker to come in. A few weeks after that, I decided to try and be the VP of Professional Development. I ended up getting the position, and becoming extremely involved in the club. Now, I’m Marketer of the Month, which is crazy.

Q: What new knowledge have you gained from attending SJFC/AMA events?

That’s hard to say. I’ve learned so much. Every speaker that comes in to talk, or event we get to attend, I always leave in awe with how much I just learned. I would say the most important knowledge I’ve gained is how to network, and the importance of it.

Q: What has been your favorite project/event while in SJFC/AMA?

Marketing Week 2016. It was a lot of work to plan, but I’m really glad I got the experience and was able to bring so many great speakers to campus. I can’t wait for next year!

Q: What would you say is the biggest benefit of being part SJFC/AMA?

AMA has given me a lot of confidence. From confidence in speaking to professionals, whether I’m networking or not to confidence in the work I produce. That’s probably what I value most about my time with AMA, that it’s made me a much more confident and self-assure person.

Q: How would you spend one million dollars?

The first thing I would do would to make sure everyone in my family and myself was finically secure. I would also donate some of it. And of course, spend a little on treating myself. #TreatYoSelf

April Marketer of The Month

Andrew Brown, Blog Curator and Communications Specialist

Q: What has been your favorite project/event while in SJFC/AMA?

A: Really? Is that a real question? Obviously the blog. Not only has the blog allowed me to start something and watch it grow, but, it’s kept me doing something I love: writing.

Q: What have you gained from being a part of SJFC/AMA

A: Aside from my experience as one of the First Men of SJFC/AMA, marketing club has allowed me to do a few things. First, it’s made me step outside my comfort zone and do things I wouldn’t normally do, like going to networking events. Second, and on the same topic, the networking opportunities are seemingly endless; and finally, the friendships I’ve made have been beyond invaluable and I know I’ll hold on to many of them far beyond my years at Fisher.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring bloggers?

A: Just write, and when you can’t write anymore, keep writing. Just like anything else, writing takes practice, so the more you do it, the better you’ll get. With that in mind, if you find yourself getting frustrated or what not, take a break — writing’s meant to me fun, so if you need to take a step back, do it. I promise the keyboard or pencil will be waiting for you when you come back.

Q: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

A: Probably Justin Bieber. I think the Biebs and I have quite a bit in common.

March Marketer of The Month

 Anna Cuthbert, VP of Fundraising

Q: What drew you to the club originally, and how has SJFC AMA changed since?

A: I originally joined the SJFC AMA as a freshmen to explore different opportunities with marketing. Now, three years later, the club has grown tremendously! The number of agency tours, industry speakers, and consulting projects continue to increase each semester, and I love it!

Q: What do you like most about SJFC AMA?

A: I love that the SJFC AMA has provided me with opportunities to experience what it would be like to have a career in marketing. I feel that this has been a great resume builder, given me more confidence in the industry, and has prepared me for the workforce!

Q: What has been your favorite project/event while in SJFC AMA?

A: My favorite event while in the SJFC AMA has been being able to attend the AMA international conference in New Orleans. I learned so much, and it was a great way to network with marketers from across America!

Q: What has been your hardest challenge since being in the club?

A: The most difficult challenge I have faced in the SJFC AMA is thinking of new and innovative ways to raise money for the club! As the Vice President of Fundraising, it is my responsibility to raise money that goes towards our amazing events, including our annual trip to New Orleans! This year, I organized the first annual Business Ball. This event was the club’s largest fundraiser yet, raising $1,400.

Q: What advice do you have for those interested in joining AMA?

A: Just do it! No other class or organization can teach you more about marketing, and give you so many opportunities! I won’t lie, joining as a freshman was intimidating, but I’m so glad I did it! It gave me time to learn and grow in to the marketer I am today.

Q: If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: If I had to eat one meal for the rest of my life, I would have a cookout; a cheeseburger, pasta salad, corn in the cob, beans, and fruit salad!
